YOKOSUKA, JAPAN – At Ikego Elementary School, students and staff look forward to a special tradition each month: GLOW time.

On the third Tuesday of every month, instruction pauses for a meaningful 30 minutes dedicated to character building and fostering stronger relationships among students and staff.

But on April 17, GLOW time took on an exciting twist for students in grades 3 through 5.

This month’s theme focused on Respect—what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like at Ikego. Students gathered for a school-wide activity where they explored this core value together. The lesson was capped off with an energy-filled teacher relay race that had students cheering loudly as their teachers raced to sort examples and non-examples correctly across the cafeteria!

But the celebration didn’t stop there. With College and Career Ready Standards Summative Assessment just around the corner, the Ikego Student Ambassadors stepped up to spread some encouragement. In collaboration with the school’s Military Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) and fourth grade teacher Ms. Dawn Bumstead, the ambassadors led an uplifting session that motivated their peers to “let their knowledge GLOW” on the upcoming assessments.

The event was a powerful reminder that at Ikego, learning goes beyond academics—it’s also about building community, lifting each other up, and celebrating what makes each student shine.
