Ikego Elementary students show mastery of standards through fashion design
Fourth graders at Ikego Elementary School showcased their creativity and understanding of insect characteristics, adaptations, and fashion design.
Students participated in a three-week project-based learning unit called “Project Bugway” where they created fashion designs based on a chosen insect. They included colors, textures, and shapes unique to their insect and built their designs for display on a fashion doll to share with the school and community. The class had a fun time working together in pairs to design and choose fabrics to complete their fashion looks.
“I am so glad I got to do this project; it was really great sharing ideas with my partner about our fashion design and then making it,” said fourth grade student Ingrid Iribe.
Students also researched and wrote an informative report about their insect and set up a fashion display on trifolds in the school library. The presentations were a great way to encourage other students’ interest in reading and learning about rare insects around the world.
“It was interesting to research a bug I didn’t know about and creating the fashion design was so much fun,” said fourth grade student Maya Douglas.
Through this project, students were able to collaborate and create something unique together while showing mastery of the standards in an inventive way. The students were also excited to make connections with real life careers – scientist, writer, and fashion designer!
